According to the EPA, the average family of four can use 400 gallons of water every day. That is alot of water!!
You may have noticed that the Abington Water Department had raised the rates (temporarily) by just over a dollar per 100cf of water. While this is less then a penny per gallon increase every little bit of savings adds up. Some ideas to reduce water usage:
- Older toilets use between 3.5 and 7 gallons of water per flush. However, low flow labeled toilets require 75 to 80 percent less water.
- A leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water every day.
- A bathroom faucet generally runs at 2 gallons of water per minute. By turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving, a person can save more than 200 gallons of water per month.
- Replacing the faucet aerator with a .5 gallon per minute can reduce usage by 75%.
- High-efficiency washing machines use less then 27 gallons, where as tradiational models can use up to 54 gallons.
- Not rinsing the dishes proir to loading the dishwasher could save 10 gallons per load.
- Keeping a pitcher of water in the refrigerator saves time and water instead of running the tap until it gets cold.
- Leaks in the the average household can account for upto 10,000 gallons lost, which could easily fill a swimming pool! Multiply that among all the houses in the US, it uses more than the city of Miami.
