The results are in! Our visitors think that Abington recycles between 10% and 25%. The official amount is 19% for 2009. Did you know that Abington pays $81 a ton for trash pickup? The town throws out 5700 tons of trash a year, or about a half a million thrown in the landfill. Abington pays a flat rate of $36,000/month for recyclables (no matter if we throw away 1 can or a million)
If we increased the recycling, and reduce the trash tonnage by three percent (less than 5 pounds per resident) that would save the town about $15,000 that could be used to fund other town function instead of sending it to the landfill.
We all know that April showers bring May flowers, did you also know that it brings a higher trash bill for the town? Yep.. The extra water adds to the weight of the trash pickup. Water weighs eight pounds to a gallon, across the a full days pickup this extra weigh is just going to the landfill. Put a lid on it!!
In case you need a reference of what is recyclable, please see the resources page on the site or SSRCOOP.INFO
